SENIOR SERVICES INC. HELPS FUND HONOR FLIGHT

Senior Services, Inc. (SSI) recently expanded its support of Fountain Hills veterans through Honor Flight Arizona. Honor Flight was started by the daughter of a WWII B-24 nose gunner in 2008. Twelve veterans flew on the first trip in November, 2009. At the end of 2017 Honor Flight had sponsored 68 flights transporting 1700 WWII and Korean War veterans. Almost 1400 volunteers, called “Guardians,” consisting mainly of family and friends, pay their own way to accompany the Honor Flight veterans. Fountain Hills residents are scheduled to participate in the five flights planned for the spring 2018 period.

The mission of Honor Flight AZ is to pay homage to WWII and Korean War veterans by providing the support needed for them to complete a three day journey of honor and remembrance to their memorials in Washington D.C. at no cost to them. Honor Flight AZ is a 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) organization that handles meal planning, hotel accommodations, safe passage through security, banquet dinners with guest speakers, scheduling tours, flights and buses and ensuring families are aware of all facets of the trip.

Currently, 5 WWII and 350 Korean War vets are on a waiting list, ready to go. There are also 260 Vietnam vets already signed up, although they are not eligible until WWII and Korean War vets (mainly because of age) have had their chance. Honor Flight expects the volume of Vietnam veterans to increase significantly. Currently, the majority of Fountain Hills veterans are from the Vietnam era.

Senior Services Inc. (SSI) has been serving the senior population of Fountain Hills for more than 25 years. Its goal is to support existing qualified organizations that need assistance with fund raising, and new organizations that need start-up funds. Its mission is to support organizations and activities that enhance the lives of the senior population in Fountain Hills in the area of health, recreation and education.

SSI has provided funding assistance for the Town's Technology Learning Center, Home Delivered Meals, River of Time Museum, Bingo, ADOG/Dog Parks, Community Garden, the School Mentoring Program as well as other veterans’ programs and activities.

Senior Services Inc., funded by the Senior Services Foundation, invites everyone to visit their website at www.fhseniorservices.org to donate funds or to apply for a grant to help achieve a goal that serves the Fountain Hills senior population.

                                                Senior Services, Inc. offers grants

Senior Services, Inc. (SSI) has grant funds available for organizations that improve the lives of the senior population in Fountain Hills.

SSI has received contributions from Friends in the Hills, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Valley of the Sun United Way, Senior Services Foundation and individuals who support their mission.  According to SSI Board President, El Studebaker, “We actively seek donations, and want to get the funds out to qualified organizations as quickly as possible.”

SSI was formed in the early 1990s to serve as the financial arm of the Home Delivered Meals program.  In recent years the administrative funding for Home Delivered Meals was assumed by the Town of Fountain Hills.  SSI continues to assist in keeping the meal cost reasonable and with volunteer expenses, but they have also expanded to support other organizations that provide services to our senior community.

The mission of Senior Services, Inc. is to support organizations and activities that enhance the lives of the senior population in Fountain Hills in the areas of health, recreation and education by providing funding and other services.

SSI provides non-profit status for The Technology Learning Center (TLC) and Bingo, both offered at the Community Center.  This year they also provided a grant to The River of Time Museum for better signage, and a matching-fund grant to ADOG to provide a bench in the dog park for seniors.

SSI offers mini-grants up to $1,000.00, and matching fund grants for higher amounts.  They are particularly interested in projects that may bring youth and seniors together.

In order to get the word out about grant opportunities they have updated information on their website and are available for presentations to organizations that are interested in learning more.  For more information, or to donate, you may visit www.fhseniorservices.org.

On Saturday, December 8th 48 Fountain Hills Seniors enjoyed free transportation to the Silver Star Theater in Mesa to see “A Christmas Carol, The Musical.”  This was the first event sponsored by the Town of Fountain Hills and Senior Services, Inc  (SSI) for a newly established program called New Adventures.

New Adventures is designed to provide transportation to events outside the Fountain Hills area that the senior population would not, or could not, attend because of a reluctance to drive.  Participants pay for admission to the program, but not for the transportation.  Senior Services, Inc. provides funds for charter buses, and for the services of AZ Trails to organize the events.

Two more trips are being planned for winter 2019, and up to four next fall and winter.  Ideas for the events include “Carnival of Illusion” magic show, the OdySea Aquarium, the Musical Instrument Museum, Rawhide, the Arabian Horse Show, Schnepf Farms and the Queen Creek Olive Mill as well as possible day trips to Prescott or to a vineyard for a wine tasting.  The next event will be announced in the Community Center newsletter in January and in the Fountain Hills Times.

The mission of Senior Services, Inc. is to support organizations and activities that enhance the lives of the senior population in Fountain Hills in the areas of health, recreation and education by providing funding and other services.  For more information about SSI, or to request grant funding for your organization, please visit www.fhseniorservices.org .SSI offers New Adventures
