SUPPORT GROUPS
  • Stroke Support Group - 4th Friday - 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
    Our first meeting will be held on Friday, October 24, 2008 beginning at 3:00 p.m. Subsequent meetings will be held on the 4th Fridays of each month beginning at 3:00 p.m. The guest speaker at our October meeting will be Victoria M. Swatzell, Nurse Practitioner in Scottsdale HealthCare's neurology department. Victoria will inform us regarding the "STAR" program......"Steps Against Recurrent Strokes." Register by calling the Senior Activity Center at 480-816-5888.
  • Crohn's & Colitis Support Group - 1st Wednesdays - 7:00-8:30 PM.
    Meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of each month with the exception of the October meeting which will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 starting at 7:00 p.m. The date change is to accommodate our guest speaker that evening, Michael Shapiro, M.D., gastroenterolgist. He is donating his time to provide helpful information which we appreciate. Please call and reserve your spot so we know what space to block. Call 816-5226.

    We will have guest speakers every month thereafter on the 1st Wednesday of the month beginning at 7:00 p.m. All interested persons welcome.

    No fee.
  • Alzheimer's - 1st Tuesday - 2:30 - 4:30 p.m.
    This support group assists persons with Alzheimer's disease, their families and caregivers by sharing information on the disease, current research and caregiving approaches. The Alzheimer's Association provides education, support and advocacy.
  • Bereavement - 2nd and 4th Wednesday 10-11:30 a.m.
    Petra Luna is a trained bereavement counselor from Hospice of the Valley who presides over the Bereavement meetings. The meetings are for all persons interested in the bereavement process including but not limited to the following: Depression; loss of a loved one; loss of a pet; loss of a job; divorce; separation; or anything else that changes your outlook on life.
  • Caregivers Support Group - 1st Monday - 9:30-11:30 a.m.
    If you have been involved in a support group for a particular disease you know that the program content revolves around the disease itself. This group is just for you, the caregiver. Join this group and share experiences and learn what steps you can take to relieve yourself of some of the stress of being a care partner.
  • Diabetes - 1st Wednesdays from 2-4:00 p.m.
    Resuming in October, 2008. Our speaker for the October 1, 2008 meeting (2-4 p.m.) is Dr. Thomas Babu. Dr. Babu will discuss "Diabetic Retinopathy." Diabetic Retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that results from damage to blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). At first, diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms or only mild vision problems. Eventually, however, diabetic retinopathy can result in blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in adults in the United States. Symptoms: Spots floating in your vision; blurred vision; dark streaks or a red film that blocks your vision; poor night vision and vision loss. To reserve your seat, please call 816-5226.
  • Low Vision - 3rd Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Speaker for our October 15, 2008 meeting is Janet Menke. More details on her bio soon to come. Meeting dates are the following: October 15, 2008 and January 21, 2009.
    This group is for persons with low vision and their care partners. Meetings are arranged with presentations by professionals about resources including helpful devices and research updates. Members help with planning.
  • Low Hearing Screenings-4th Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Hearing screenings will resume in the fall. Appointment required. Contact the Senior Activity Center.
  • Low Hearing Support Group-4th Wednesdays from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Resuming September 24, 2008. Speakers vary.
    Very popular and interesting group....come join us.
    For those who are hearing impaired and their families--this group offers support and sharing of ideas and new technology.
  • Parkinson's - 1st Wednesdays of the month starting at 9:30 a.m.
    No fee and reservations are not necessary. All meetings are centered for those with Parkinson's Disease, caregivers, family, friends, neighbors and any and all interested parties.
  • Parkinson's Exercise - Resuming September 5, 2008, Friday at 9:00 a.m.

  • Parkinson's Support Group - Guest Speakers for all meetings - 1st Wednesdays from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Note: There will be NO meeting in November. Instead, there will be two meetings in October as follows: Wednesday, October 1st (their normal meeting date) and, Wednesday, October 22nd (replaces the November meeting).
